The Internet as an Empowering Agent for Small, Medium and Micro Tourism Enterprises in Poor Countries
by Faustin Kamuzora
Abstract:
Information is critical to tourism vast value chain and now, than ever before, the Internet is becoming the center of tourism information systems. The paper summarises evidence of how some of the Internet services are empowering small, medium and micro tourist enterprises (SMMTEs) in poor countries through disintermediation. Using some of the results of a study on the state of electronic tourism in Tanzania, the paper reveals that the majority of SMMTEs are already employing some of the Internet services to directly communicate with customers from the source markets and conduct their business successfully despite the known digital divide limitations.
